West Wyalong

New South Wales

The twin towns of Wyalong and West Wyalong retain a feel of the bygone gold era, with many historic buildings, and old-style shop facades. Situated at the intersection of the Newell and Mid Western Highways, 154 kilometres north of Wagga Wagga and 139 kilometres south-west of Parkes, West Wyalong rose from the plains following the discovery of gold in 1893. The town pays tribute to its gold-mining history with parks and museums including the Wyalong Museum, Beckett's Pioneer Farm and the 25 metre Poppet Head structure above a mineshaft. Explore the Green Corridor walking track that leads to the original town of Wyalong and its collection of historic buildings. Visit the nearby historic bush towns of Tallimba, Ungarie, Weethalle, Barmedman and Mirrool. Stop at Lake Cowal, a resting place for migratory birds or explore the Wedding Mountains once a hideaway for bushrangers.
