Tips and Tricks

Camping is the best way to spend New Year’s Eve (updated for 2019)

You’ve spent New Year’s Eve in city rooftop bars for too many years now. It all gets a bit mundane when each year is the same, right? You spend hundreds of dollars on entry fees and drink packages at bars that you could go to any old weekend. To make matters worse, you’re suckered into lining up for drinks and paying an outrageous Uber surcharge to get home. This year, why not try something different?

Camping over New Year’s Eve has always been popular for outdoorsy types. There’s nothing more relaxing than spending your summer beach-camping with a couple of mates, a full esky, and a radio blasting tunes.

The most popular camping spots are beachside, for obvious reasons. Byron Bay, the Gold Coast and sunny Noosa are three of our all-time favourite spots to park up and see the new year in. Here’s why:

Chill out at Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a hippie town for city slickers. Admittedly, it has become increasingly touristy over the last few years. However, on the bright side, the town now boasts oodles bars – perfect for New Year’s Eve. Also, if you’re looking for smashed avo and a green smoothie, you won’t be short of choices.

Music lovers won’t be able to pass up the opportunity to camp out at Falls Festival over the New Year period. Falls has a chill vibe – it’s nothing like the ghosts of festivals past (may Stereosonic and Big Day Out rest in peace). Festival camping is perfect because you can venture back to the campsite for a nap if it all gets a bit too much.

If you’re not into festivals, but still want a fun camping atmosphere then head to Belongil Fields. Hundreds of campers head here over every New Year’s Eve, bringing massive marquee tents and DJ booths. Camping at Belongil allows you to meet new people and celebrate the New Year without worrying about taxis, the perfect outfit, or huge queues. True to tradition, you might even see a firework or two at midnight.

For something more relaxed, kick back in a cabin or camp under the stars at Byron Holiday Park you won’t be disappointed!

Party on the Gold Coast

Famed for its white sandy beaches and bustling night life, the Gold Coast is an obvious choice for New Year’s Eve, right? Perhaps you dream of the chilled vibes at Burleigh Heads or crave the unmistakable pulse of Surfers Paradise. Wherever you choose, the celebrations are endless.

The go-to family favourite is the annual firework displays in and around the city. Combining soft sand, epic atmospheres and an overwhelming turnout, you’ll quite literally be stuck in the moment! Pull up a chair at Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, Broadbeach or Coolangatta and enjoy the ripper light show. If you really want to fit in, don’t forget some cold bevvies and a cheese platter – that’s totally GC.

For something a little more glamorous, dress up and attend one of the exclusive New Years Eve parties held across multiple locations. The Atrium Bar at The Star, Skypoint Observation Deck Q1 and the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove Resort hold epic parties full of glitter, glam and unlimited alcohol – yep, you heard right.

If celebrations are all a bit too much, you can always kick back in your cabin or relax under the stars in your tent at one of our fave camping spots. If you miss the fireworks in person, you’ll be sure to catch them on every national tv channel, so #stressless. Our top camping picks include BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park, NRMA Treasure Island Holiday Resort and Nobby Beach Holiday Village.

Get beachy at Noosa

Located on the picturesque sunny coast, Noosa is a hub for surfers, beach lovers and outdoorsy souls. However, it’s more than just your average tourist destination. The abundance of coastal trails, family attractions and the extra friendly community makes it a popular place to settle. However, back on topic, it’s also a top spot to celebrate New Year’s Eve!

Whether you’re a party animal, homebody or an eager adventurer, there’s an event for you here. So get excited and start planning, 2019 is just around the corner.

We’re in Australia, let’s be real, who wouldn’t be down for a summer beach party!? Wonderland inc, a beach club on the sands of Noosa Main Beach is turning dreams into reality this year, with the ultimate NYE beach bash! From sunset, there’ll be DJ sets, cold bevvies, cocktails and more, and what’s even better is the firework show to welcome in the New Year at midnight – it’ll be a cracker!

Perfect for the whole family, The Mooloolaba New Years Eve Festival is the biggest and most loved (& free) NYE event on the Sunshine Coast. With live music and entertainment, street vendors, performers and stunning sunset views, you’ll have the best time welcoming in 2019.

For a relaxing vacay, we totally recommend securing a night or two at our favourite holiday park nearby; Ingenia Holidays Noosa.
