Five must-do NSW road trips for your bucket list

There’s nothing like a classic Aussie road trip. Our country is vast; there’s much to discover off the beaten track. This makes travelling by road a fantastic option – you’ll have the freedom to discover it all at your own pace. If you’re based in New South Wales, there are oodles of iconic touring routes to explore. We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite NSW road trips, just for you.

Forget Netflix, it’s time to road trip and chill.

Kosciuszko-Alpine Way

The iconic Kosciuszko-Alpine Way touring route starts in Jindabyne. You’ll drive through Kosciuszko National Park to the lakeside town of Khancoban in the Snowy mountains. Treat yourself dramatic snow-capped mountain vistas and explore lush wilderness. There’s plenty of RV-friendly accommodation along the way, including NRMA Jindabyne Holiday Park  and campgrounds in the national park.

Distance: 108km one-way

Terrain: Steep and narrow in parts (between Khancoban and Thredbo). This trip is not suitable for vehicles towing caravans

Why this is one of our favourite NSW road trips: Unforgettable mountain views and activities such as hiking, fishing and mountain biking.

Waterfall Way

Starting from Coffs Harbour, drive towards New England region to explore timeless rainforests, vast national parks, quaint countryside and peaceful open plains. Stop to admire the many epic waterfalls along this touring route.

Distance: 185 km one-way

Terrain: Easy! All vehicles will love this cruisy drive.

Why this is one of our favourite NSW road trips: It’s right there in the name – waterfalls galore! Enjoy the scenic walking tracks and stunning lookouts.

Snowy Valleys Way

Explore the breathtaking foothills of Snowy Mountains on the Snowy Valleys Way touring route.  You’ll traverse charming and historic country towns including Tumut, Corryong, Gundagai, and Beechworth. Be sure to sample the region’s world-class wines from local cellars and restaurants along the way.

Distance: 300 km one-way

Terrain: Easy! All vehicles will love this cruisy drive.

Why this is one of our favourite NSW road trips: It’s an amazing drive home to stunning views and historic towns – you’ll love it!

The Grand Pacific Drive

This scenic southbound coastal route will take you from Royal National Park to Wollongong, and further down to Kiama. Seek out coastal towns, swim at serene beaches, and marvel at ancient rainforests you will pass throughout your journey. Be sure to stop at Stanwell Tops, Bald Hill Lookout or Sea Cliff Bridge, to soak up the vast coastal views.

Distance: 140 km one-way

Terrain: Easy: Easy! All vehicles will love this cruisy drive.

Why this is one of our favourite NSW road trips: As the name suggests, it’s a grand experience! Enjoy the stunning lookouts and smooth journey.

The Long Paddock

Wander the open spaces, dramatic sand dunes and dense marshlands of Outback NSW as you travel from Echuca Moama to Wilcannia. Experience the famed rural towns of Broken Hills, Bourke and White Cliffs as you drive through the stock farmland route, which is still in use to this day.

Distance: 610 km one-way

Terrain: Easy – accessible by caravan, car or 4WD. Long open stretches of road!
